about first presbyterian church of lewiston

Welcome to the First Presbyterian Church of Lewiston! We invite you to join us in giving thanks and praise to God at our Sunday worship services. We’re proud to serve the Lewiston and greater Niagara communities through worship, fellowship, teaching, and community outreach.

our history

The oldest church in the village, First Presbyterian Church of Lewiston has a long and faithful history. Established as an official congregation on June 12, 1817, our first Communion was celebrated with just 11 members. By 1820, membership had grown to 26, and Sunday School welcomed 75 children. The first brick of our church was laid in 1830, and by 1835, services and meetings were held in our first completed building.

In 1839, the church property was purchased, and the deed finalized the following year. After financial hardship forced a sale, the congregation repurchased the building for $101—a sign of deep faith and commitment. Through the generosity of the Holland Land Company (1846–1848), additional land was granted and sold to fund construction, adding our iconic cupola, Doric columns, and a new organ. In 1906, a basement was added for Sunday School rooms and a small kitchen.

From these humble beginnings, several neighboring Presbyterian churches—including those in Niagara Falls, Youngstown, and Lockport—grew out of our early ministry.

The 1960s brought new growth:

a larger sanctuary was built in 1965, and our Nursery School/Pre-K opened in 1966. In 1982, we founded HART (Home Assistance Referral Team), serving seniors across Niagara County with in-home support and companionship.

Over the years, our church has also served as a home for community groups like the Boy Scouts, AA, the Red Cross, and others who use our building for meetings and programs.

Today, we are blessed with two sanctuaries—the historic Old Stone Church, used in spring and fall, and our newer air-conditioned space for summer worship.

We are a welcoming, caring congregation with deep roots and open hearts. For more than 200 years, our mission has remained the same: to worship God, grow in faith, and serve others in Christ’s name.

looking toward today

While our roots run deep, our vision looks forward. Each Sunday, we gather as a community of faith to worship, learn, and grow together. Our services are centered on biblical teaching, heartfelt worship, and authentic relationships that help us live out our faith beyond Sunday mornings.

We’re a church that values connection, compassion, and spiritual growth—a place where people of all ages and backgrounds can discover God’s love and purpose for their lives. Whether you’ve been part of the church your whole life or are exploring faith for the first time, there’s a place for you here.

At First Presbyterian Church of Lewiston, we remain committed to the same mission that began over 200 years ago:
to worship God, grow in faith, and serve others in Christ’s name—in our community, in our homes, and in our everyday lives.
